M.E.Ch.A. de UC Davis is a student movement and organization on campus dedicated to political action, critical awareness, and educational equity for the Chican@/Latin@ community. We support the Senate Resolution 20.which calls for UC Regents to divest from the occupation of Palestine. We also stand in support with Students for Justice in Palestine, for their efforts in the UC wide divestment movement.
Senate Resolution 20 calls for divestment from corporations that are utilized by the Israeli government for the systemic, violent extermination, and diaspora of the indigenous peoples of Palestine. We know that Caterpillar, an American corporation specializing in construction and mining equipment, has been used to bulldoze the homes of Palestinians as well as in the reinforcement of the U.S. /Mexico border. We know that G4S, an international security corporation, is responsible for the deportation of both Palestinians and Mexicans, as well as for providing surveillance technology that contributes to the militarization of both countries.
We denounce the occupation of Palestine and any efforts made to justify the ongoing violence and genocide. We will stand with the Palestinian community in our collective struggle. We know that we live in an inherently unequal capitalist system and seek to be active dissenters and critical consumers. We support the resolution in the hopes that our student fees and university funds will be utilized, not to fuel apartheid and occupation, but to ensure a greater future for everyone. We call upon UC Davis to the same.
In solidarity,
M.E.Ch.A. de UC Davis

Love Fashion, Hate Sweatshops
MEChA de UCD promoted sweatshop-free apparel in a "Love Fashion, Hate Sweatshops" fashion show held on March 3rd, 2011. The brand Alta Gracia has been promoted by United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS) in universities across the country. This brand is based in Villa Alta Gracia in the Dominican Republic and is a sweatshop-free factory that supports unions. Because of living wages paid in this factory, workers have the opportunity to put food on the table, receive health care, get an education, buy books, get out of debt and build safe homes.
The UC Davis bookstore, at the time, only had three Alta Gracia items. MEChA held the fashion show to educate the campus and spread awareness of the alternatives to the sweatshop clothing sold at the bookstore. The fashion show, and a mass collection of signatures collected in support of the brand drove the bookstore to increase its order from Alta Gracia Apparel.

May 23rd, 2011
The week of May 23rd was Palestinian Awareness Week. MEChA collaborated with Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) to create a mock border that was to represent the wall that currently separates Palestine and Israel, as well as the U.S. Mexican Border.
Events for Palestinian Awareness Week included a mock Israeli check point, a "die-in", and the display of several large murals.
