M.E.Ch.A. de UC Davis is proud to announce the reinstatement of the Oscar E. Gomez Scholarship. Originally from Baldwin Park, California, Oscar E. Gomez was a student at UC Davis during the 1990s. Throughout his activism at UC Davis, Gomez sought to promote high education, Chicanx/Latinx youth empowerment, and social justice. His radio show on KDVS, called La Onda Xicana, was a forum that motivated and educated his audience about Chicanismx through the lens of politics, music, hxstory, social justice, and cultura. His dedication to the Chicanx/Latinx community was cut short when Gomez was found dead in 1994, near UC Santa Barbara. Through this scholarship, M.E.Ch.A. de UC Davis seeks to continue Gomez's work and preserve his legacy of promoting higher education for Chicanx/Latinx youth.
